Planning a visit to the Museum?
What subway is nearest the Museum?
We suggest, when possible, that you and your students travel by subway to reach the Museum. Part of your students' Museum experience will involve comparing today's subway trains and stations with those of the past. Having students consider features of trains and stations observed on their journey to and from the Museum will help them to connect, compare and contrast their own experience with the equipment and other elements they learn about on their visit.
The Transit Museum is located in Brooklyn Heights, just a few blocks from the Borough Hall station on the 2, 3, 4, 5, M, N and R lines, the Jay Street-Borough Hall station on the A, C, and F lines, and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station on the A,C, and G lines.
If we travel to the Museum by school bus, where can our bus park?
There is little parking for buses in the Downtown Brooklyn area, but bus drivers needing to wait for groups are encouraged to seek space along State Street, just south of the Museum or along Schermerhorn Street, west of the Museum.
How do you accommodate studentsí special needs?
To ensure that the approach, content and pace of the Museum program is most appropriate, tours and workshop activities for students with special needs are planned in consultation with the group leader or teachers prior to their visit.
Is the Transit Museum wheelchair accessible?
Yes. Please share information regarding the needs of your group when making your reservation. We suggest that your group arrive early to allow the additional time needed for entry via the Museumís one-person lift for wheelchairs, located at our Court Street entrance.
Do you have bilingual tour guides?
Not at present. Groups are encouraged to bring translators to assist non-English speakers.
Can we eat lunch in the Museum?
Yes. Food and beverages are not sold at the Museum, but your students may bring bag lunches to eat in our lunchroom. Please reserve space in the lunchroom when making your group reservation.
Can I bring my class for a self-guided visit of the Museum?
All groups are encouraged to make a reservation to visit the Museum. Should groups prefer to self-guide, we recommend that they visit during our non-peak afternoon hours, beginning at 1 PM. We require one adult chaperone for every ten students. Chaperones must remain with students at all times.
Do the subway train cars in the Museum ever move?
Most of the vintage train cars in our collection work. We take them out for special excursions in the summer. Check our printed and online calendars for the dates and times of our popular Nostalgia Train rides.
Where can I get a subway map?
We do not have maps to distribute at the Museum, but you may contact Frank Marino, New York City Transit Marketing, about obtaining subway and bus maps for use in your classroom. Phone: (646) 252-6862 Fax: (646) 252-6857.
